Nevada faces some of the greatest challenges in health care access nationwide. Both urban and rural communities are underserved, largely because of physician shortages. Although Nevada’s medical schools graduate many talented students, many must leave the state to complete residency or fellowship training because Nevada has fewer Graduate Medical Education (GME) opportunities than it produces medical graduates.
To help close this gap, the State established the GME Grant Program to expand graduate medical training and strengthen Nevada’s physician workforce. Managed by the Nevada Health Authority (NVHA), the program provides competitive funding to Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)–accredited institutions in Nevada, prioritizing the specialties most urgently needed. NVHA not only awards these grants but also ensures accountability through regular reporting and on site visits with grantees.
By 2025, Nevada has awarded 29 GME grants totaling $28.5 million. These investments support programs with the capacity to train 166 physicians each year, helping to grow the state’s health care workforce and improve access to care for communities across Nevada.
